Chengdu Pandas & the Leshan Giant Buddha

£109.00

A morning with giant pandas, an afternoon beneath the largest stone Buddha on earth.

Overview

Two of Sichuan's icons in a single day. The morning belongs to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, best in the early hours when the pandas are active and feeding. The afternoon heads south to Leshan, where a 71-metre Tang-dynasty Buddha is carved into the cliff at the meeting of three rivers, seen from the clifftop stairs or a boat at its feet.

Itinerary

Chengdu Panda Breeding Base: China's National Symbol, World's Wildlife Treasure

White with black fur on their ears, limbs, shoulders and around the eyes, an effective summer and winter camouflage, giant pandas are unmistakeable.

Here, you’ll see pandas in a setting that mirrors their natural habitat, with plenty of space, trees to climb, hills to roll down and, of course, piles and piles of bamboo. They are also given enrichment activities while being treated as much like wild animals as they can be.

Leshan Giant Buddha: Buddhist Art Through the Ages

Carved out of a hill, the largest Buddha in the world dates back to the 8th century. It is built between 713 and 803 (during the Tang dynasty), depicting Maitreya. It is carved out of a cliff face of Cretaceous red bed sandstones that lies at the confluence of the Min River and Dadu River.

River cruise to the Buddha's feet

The boat trip allows you to get the best and fullest front-facing view of the Buddha from a distance and is ideal for those who prefer not to wait in line and climb the stairs. The cruise takes around 30 minutes there and back, stopping for several minutes in front of the Buddha for visitors to appreciate the statue and take pictures. It's best to sit on the right side of the boat, as the Buddha will end up being on that side once you arrive.
